Indigo Fire Ignite Synth-Driven Emotion on “Gone Away”

Indigo Fire may be a new name on the scene, but their story spans decades. Formed in 2025 by longtime school friends Guy Martland and Pete Burdon, the band is the product of patience, persistence, and a shared love of music that never faded through careers in medicine and the life sciences. Inspired as teenagers by The Cure’s Wish tour, the two finally began writing and recording together during the pandemic, with help from producer Dan Skinner. Their debut single, Lyrics for a Song, arrived earlier this year — and now, their follow-up, Gone Away, shows just how much emotional weight they’re capable of carrying.
Where Lyrics for a Song leaned into atmosphere, Gone Away hits harder. Built on swelling synths, an urgent drum line, and subtle guitar textures, the track captures the push and pull of grief and frustration. Its title says it all — this is music about absence, about the emotional fallout when something or someone slips out of reach. The lyrics are raw without being overwrought, pairing intimacy with universality in a way that feels both personal and relatable.
Sonically, Indigo Fire sit somewhere between Depeche Mode’s shadowy synths, Pink Floyd’s sense of scale, and New Order’s rhythmic pulse. But they’re not interested in nostalgia — the band’s eclectic influences filter into a sound that feels fresh, modern, and above all authentic. Gone Away is proof that their years spent playing in orchestras, jazz ensembles, and blues bands have sharpened not just their technical skill but their sense of musical storytelling.
The track also teases what’s to come on their forthcoming debut album, Incipient. If Gone Away is any indication, Indigo Fire’s first full-length will be a journey through light and shadow, weaving resilience, melancholy, and catharsis into songs that balance catchiness with depth.
For a band three decades in the making, Indigo Fire sound anything but tentative. Gone Away is confident, poignant, and resonant — the kind of song that lingers long after the final note.
