Lucid Aisle: Silhouette Dream

A Decade-Old Recording Finds New Life in Lucid Aisle’s Surreal “Silhouette Dream” Video

by Jack Rush

Some creative ideas take years to find their proper form. For Portland musician Brent Joel Jones, the origins of Lucid Aisle’s “Silhouette Dream” stretch back nearly a decade, to an improvised guitar session that was never intended to become a finished composition, much less the foundation of an elaborate visual narrative.

The original recording began with a clean electric guitar riff, gradually expanded through layers of looped melodies. Jones began improvising poetry over the arrangement, capturing a performance that might otherwise have disappeared entirely. The original instrumental loop was eventually lost, but a rough recording survived.

In spring 2026, Jones returned to that recording and reconstructed the music, preserving the spontaneity of its beginnings while giving the composition a new life.

Its accompanying video has now become an equally significant undertaking.

Filmed by cinematographer Kyle Indigo and featuring Tillatha Leigh, a friend and collaborator of Jones for approximately two decades, the production developed without the rigid framework of a traditional screenplay. Scenes were conceived and filmed across separate days, with the participants gradually discovering connections between images that initially appeared unrelated.

Only during editing did the broader narrative begin to reveal itself.

The finished work draws on a distinctly unconventional cinematic vocabulary. There are echoes of David Lynch's dream logic, Salvador Dalí's surrealist imagery, and the psychological intensity of films such as Natural Born Killers. Yet the video's significance lies less in these recognizable influences than in its willingness to leave certain questions unanswered.

Jones and his collaborators have described the experience as unusually serendipitous, with unexpected circumstances repeatedly influencing the production's direction.

That openness to chance is particularly relevant to a project whose source material nearly disappeared years earlier.

“Silhouette Dream” is also not intended to stand entirely alone. A forthcoming video for “The Great Cosmic Dance” will function as its narrative predecessor, ultimately transforming the two tracks from Lucid Aisle's Lounge of Fractals EP into a connected short film.

What began as an improvised recording has developed into a larger consideration of memory, coincidence, and the ways artistic meaning can change over time.

For Jones, the passage of a decade has not diminished the original idea. Instead, it has provided the distance, collaborators, and circumstances necessary for that idea to become something its creator could not have anticipated.
