Mama Cleo Finds a Dangerous Kind of Comfort in “Cyanide”

There is something unsettling about knowing exactly what is hurting you and still feeling reluctant to leave it behind. Mama Cleo builds “Cyanide” around that contradiction, turning the familiarity of darkness into something seductive, destructive, and painfully difficult to surrender.
The New York-born, classically trained vocalist begins the track in a comparatively exposed place. Piano leaves little room to hide, allowing the song’s emotional tension to arrive before its bigger production moments do. As “Cyanide” expands, that restraint gives way to a more dramatic chorus, creating a push and pull between collapse and release.
What makes the song interesting is that Mama Cleo does not treat healing as an obvious destination. Darkness has become familiar enough to resemble safety. Broken dreams, destructive habits, and depressive thoughts are framed as a poison the narrator understands is harmful but has nevertheless learned how to live with. Escaping means confronting something arguably just as frightening: the unknown version of life that comes afterward.
Even faith enters “Cyanide” from an unstable place. The search for salvation is less a declaration of certainty than the response of someone running out of places to turn. That ambiguity keeps the song from wrapping its subject in an artificially neat resolution.
Mama Cleo’s expressive vocal approach suits that emotional messiness. Rather than sanding down the contradictions, “Cyanide” allows desperation, hope, attachment, and self-awareness to exist at once.
Following 2026 singles “Sacred Heart” and “Rollercoaster,” “Cyanide” continues Mama Cleo’s interest in the uncomfortable territory between vulnerability and self-reclamation. The result is not really a song about conquering darkness. It is about recognizing how difficult it can be to stop calling darkness home.
