Marsh Family: A New Way

Marsh Family: A New Way

From Parody to Purpose: The Marsh Family Make Their Most Personal Statement Yet with 'A New Way'

by Jack Rush

For millions of people, The Marsh Family arrived fully formed in the spring of 2020 — six voices, a living room, and a Les Misérables parody that stopped the internet in its tracks. The lockdown satirists who went on to skewer Suella Braverman, roast American politicians, and rack up 45 million views have always had something more serious underneath the wit. With "A New Way," the Kent-based family of six finally lets it show.

The track is the lead single from Hollow Chapters, their debut album of original material due 27th March, funded through a successful crowdfunding campaign and backed by a full PR push. It arrives as a statement of intent — and it doesn't waste any time making its point.

From the opening seconds, "A New Way" pushes forward with bright, fuzzy guitars chiming over rustling drums and splashing cymbals. There's a folk-pop glow to the arrangement, that familiar Marsh Family warmth, but something rawer and more restless running beneath it. The lead vocal, delivered by eldest son Alfie with a soulful, wounded energy, hits immediately: "Staring at the punctures and the marks, so sharp / Nothing you could ever do to patch them up / I am scarred." It's the sound of a younger generation taking stock of the world handed to them, and it lands with real weight.

The rest of the family aren't far behind. Those signature harmonies rise into the mix with soulful, wailing tenderness — human and unpolished in exactly the right way. The track has an identifiable rock skeleton, but a hint of reggae loosens its hips, and a remarkable build section around the two-and-a-half minute mark — constructed from layered fret noise and sonic texture — gives it something genuinely inventive. It's the kind of detail that rewards repeated listening and sets the song apart from what might otherwise be a straightforward indie-rock anthem.

By the time the final chords ring out, "A New Way" has made a convincing case that The Marsh Family's creative ambitions have always extended beyond the parody clips that made them famous. Hollow Chapters promises songs about grief, mythology, political courage, and solidarity — and if this opening track is any guide, the family approach that material with the same honesty and craft they've always brought to their performances.

Album launch concerts follow in April at The Garlinge Theatre in Canterbury and The Alexander Centre in Faversham, with a livestream also planned. For anyone who has followed The Marsh Family since the lockdown days, this feels like the chapter they've been building toward.
