Peter Manning Robinson: Bent out of Shape
Peter Manning Robinson Finds Joy After the Storm on the Whimsical "Bent Out of Shape"
by Jack Rush
After exploring heartbreak on the moving piano piece "Pure Heartbreak," Los Angeles-based pianist and Emmy Award-winning composer Peter Manning Robinson returns with something altogether brighter. His latest single, "Bent Out of Shape," is an uplifting instrumental that embraces optimism without sacrificing emotional depth.
From its opening moments, the composition radiates warmth and playfulness. Robinson's expressive piano work dances through lively melodies and whimsical flourishes, creating a piece that feels both cinematic and deeply personal. Rather than relying on technical virtuosity alone, "Bent Out of Shape" succeeds by inviting listeners into a joyful emotional journey—one that feels genuinely earned.
The track was born from a difficult period in Robinson's life. Reflecting on its creation, he explains, "I created the music for 'Bent Out Of Shape' after many months of struggle, both in my personal life, but as a reaction to world events. I needed an uplifting experience…some positivity. This is the beauty of music…we express our emotions and work out our issues through our art." That sense of renewal is woven throughout the piece, making it feel less like escapism and more like resilience expressed through music.
The accompanying video, directed by longtime collaborator Klaus Hoch, complements the composition beautifully. Set in a stunning seaside mansion, the film unfolds as a surreal exploration of memory, reconciliation, and shared history. Its dreamlike visuals mirror the music's emotional arc, adding another layer of storytelling without overshadowing the piano performance itself.
Robinson brings an unusually rich background to his work. An Emmy Award winner, multiple BMI Award recipient, inventor of the innovative Refractor Piano™, and accomplished film composer, he has spent decades creating music that blends classical elegance with cinematic imagination. Although much of his recent career has centered on his groundbreaking Refractor Piano™, "Bent Out of Shape" is part of his forthcoming solo piano album, Excursions, a deeply personal collection inspired by grief, healing, and hope.
Taken on its own, "Bent Out of Shape" is a refreshing reminder of instrumental music's ability to communicate complex emotions without words. Its graceful melodies, buoyant energy, and heartfelt sincerity make it one of Robinson's most immediately engaging works, offering listeners a welcome moment of lightness in an often overwhelming world.
