Pomona Park: Do Not Disturb
Pomona Park: Youthful Optimism with Lyrical Charm
Manchester-based indie-pop quartet Pomona Park are steadily carving out their place in the UK music scene with a blend of lyrical storytelling and energetic, melody-rich songwriting. Described by fans and critics alike as offering “youthful optimism with lyrical charm,” the band is gaining recognition for their emotionally intelligent narratives set against punchy, danceable backdrops.
Formed in the wake of the UK’s COVID-19 lockdowns, Pomona Park began as a reunion of old friends and new collaborators. Frontman Chris Smith and bassist Bobby Mears, schoolmates turned bandmates, recruited their work colleagues Aaron Wrigglesworth on drums and James Reid on guitar. Reconnecting with normality through music, the four-piece began shaping the sound that would become Pomona Park by the waters of Salford Quays.
Musically influenced by The Smiths and The Blossoms, and lyrically drawing from the introspective styles of Sam Fender and Alex Turner, the band made their studio debut in April 2022 with the single “Overdrink”. The track’s relatable themes and catchy structure propelled it to No. 4 on the UK Alternative Chart on release day and into the Top 100 of the UK Main Chart, a promising start for the new indie act.
Since then, Pomona Park have released seven studio singles, covering themes that range from modern dating frustrations (“icks”) to the emotional consequences of self-alteration for acceptance. Standout track “Stormy Weather” quickly garnered over 10,000 streams, reinforcing the band's growing fanbase and streaming presence. Their songs regularly earn spins on national radio, including Radio X’s X-Posure show, and secure spots in the UK Alternative Chart Top 20.
Live, the band have proven their appeal by selling out 100+ capacity venues like Gulliver’s and The Lion’s Den, building a loyal following of returning gig-goers. July 18th will see them headline Manchester’s Off The Square, with additional shows slated for later in 2025.
Their latest release, “Do Not Disturb,” is another emotionally nuanced single that balances upbeat indie-pop instrumentation with heartfelt lyrics. Inspired by a moment of real-life miscommunication between Chris and his now-wife, the track explores the common yet complex emotional disconnect that can arise in relationships.
“I wrote this song about a conversation I had with my now wife when we were walking. We had a disagreement, but it was really just a total misunderstanding. I think it refers to when you upset someone but you really don’t intend to, and how you almost misunderstand their feelings at times. Which I think is relatable for so many people,” says Smith.
With a combination of sincerity, wit, and jangly charm, Pomona Park are quickly becoming one of Manchester’s brightest indie-pop prospects. Their rising popularity, thoughtful songwriting, and energetic performances make them a band to keep firmly on your radar in 2025 and beyond.
