Zachary Mason: Man of the Universe
Zachary Mason Takes a Psychedelic Trip Across the Cosmos on “Man Of The Universe”
by Jack Rush
Guildford-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Zachary Mason blasts off into a world of space rock, psychedelia, and vintage science-fiction fantasy on his latest single, “Man Of The Universe.” A playful, riff-driven adventure, the track marks a significant milestone in Mason’s musical journey, bringing him together with legendary British producer Stuart Epps for a collaboration steeped in classic rock heritage and cosmic imagination.
With a career spanning more than five decades, Epps has worked with some of the biggest names in music, including Led Zeppelin, Elton John, George Harrison, Oasis, and Robbie Williams. For Mason, the opportunity to work with such an experienced figure was a dream come true. After sending Epps three demos in early June 2026, Mason was delighted to receive positive feedback on all three, with “Man Of The Universe” ultimately selected for production. Epps not only oversaw the studio production but also contributed drums, bass, organ, and backing vocals, giving the track an extra layer of musical depth and seasoned rock craftsmanship.
As Mason later remarked to Epps, it was a privilege to work with a “man of the music world” on a song called “Man Of The Universe” — a fitting description of a collaboration that brings together an emerging independent artist and a veteran with an extraordinary musical legacy.
Sonically, the single draws on the expansive spirit of space rock, injecting its classic-rock foundations with psychedelic flourishes and an infectious sense of adventure. Fans familiar with Mason’s earlier sci-fi-themed EP, 5…4…3…2…1…, will recognise his fondness for exploring the outer reaches of the imagination. Here, however, the emphasis is firmly on entertainment, with a tongue-in-cheek narrative that pays affectionate tribute to the golden age of pulp science-fiction magazines.
The song’s central character is a larger-than-life cosmic adventurer who knows the universe like the back of his hand. Piloting a powerful spaceship, he battles aliens and space pirates while attracting hordes of devoted female admirers along the way. It is gloriously over-the-top science-fiction storytelling, delivered with the kind of mischievous enthusiasm that makes the track feel like the soundtrack to a long-lost space adventure from another era.
What makes “Man Of The Universe” appealing is its willingness to embrace the sheer fun of rock ’n’ roll. Rather than taking itself too seriously, Mason leans into the fantastical premise, allowing the song’s energetic rock sound and psychedelic atmosphere to carry the listener on a colourful interstellar ride. Epps’ involvement adds an appealing connection to British rock history, while the track’s retro-futuristic character gives it an identity of its own.
Mason’s growing catalogue reflects an artist who enjoys exploring different genres and musical possibilities. Since beginning his recording journey in the spring of 2021, the 29-year-old has created between 200 and 250 demos, working with acoustic and electric guitars as well as keyboards. His music has attracted coverage from publications including Rolling Stone En Español, The Big Takeover, Rock Era Magazine, Return Of Rock, and TJPL News, while SPIN Magazine published an interview with him in 2025. His single “I Wish Humans Were Made In A Factory…” also reached the semi-finals of the 2025 International Songwriting Competition, and his streaming figures have surpassed one million.
With musical touchstones that include Neil Young, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, and The Beatles, Mason draws inspiration from artists known for their individuality and willingness to follow their creative instincts. “Man Of The Universe” captures that adventurous spirit in a particularly lighthearted form, combining retro science-fiction imagery with a classic-rock sensibility and the considerable experience of Stuart Epps.
Ultimately, “Man Of The Universe” is a celebration of imagination, musical collaboration, and the timeless appeal of a good rock ’n’ roll adventure. With its cosmic storyline, psychedelic leanings, and distinguished production partnership, Zachary Mason’s latest single invites listeners to leave everyday concerns behind and take a joyride through the galaxy — no spacesuit required.
