Interview: Where is Leroy?

Interview: Where is Leroy?

Where is Leroy? An unpinnable collection of electric boom bap hip hop to smooth dream-beat melodies, complemented by escapist lyrics and a steady tempo.

His music explores the relatable nuances of everyday life, delivered with a quick wit and unapologetic honesty. An affair of well-timed humour, bounce, and sordid releases.

Each song differs in stylistic delivery, tied together through rhythmic beats, dark comedy and underlining meaning, creating a holistic expression of daily life.

Born in Queensland, Australia, Leroy Jackson is a Melbourne based artist.

We had the pleasure of checking in with Leroy on the occasion of the release of his latest single “Lockdown Hours” and he was kind enough to respond to a few interview questions.

Congratulations on the release of Lockdown Hours! Can you tell us about the origin and creation of the song?

Thank you so much!
Well, in Melbourne we have been one of the longest locked down cities in the world  since covid started in 2020, only actually got out of lockdown on 19th of October this year.
It started to drive me a bit insane so I started writing “ Lockdown Hours” as a way of me pretending I could actually communicate and argue with covid as if it's somewhat of a back and forth between the virus and myself.

Have you always wanted to be an Artist? What or who inspired you to first start making music?
I've always been a writer, I used to just fill up notebooks with rhymes seeing what words I can manipulate to sound different and rhyme with others, It all started there. Once I learnt more about beats and turning them into actual songs I was hooked.
I've got whole wardrobes full of notebooks of writings just sitting there.

If you could perform with any Artist dead or alive who would it be and why?

Oh damn that's a tough one, there's so many people to consider I'd probably say Trippee Redd, his shows are dope high energy and we'd be smoking on stage during which is always fine by me hahah.

What are your long term aspirations?

I want to make my own mark on the music scene, I want to do it my way and put as much of myself into my music as possible, I don't want to be compared to anyone i want to be so much myself people are compared to me.

What’s the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been your career highlight so far?
Best thing so far has been looking into the crowd and you can see people are singing along with your songs.

Career Highlight?
That’s a loaded question hahah,
I consider it all to be a highlight I get to do what I want entirely with my music, I get to work with amazing people and learn new skills all the time, I’m so thankful and happy just to be here.

What’s the best life advice you’ve been given and be willing to share?

“ Let it all work out” -  Lil Wayne
Please play that song at my funeral.

What can we expect next from Where is Leroy?
Well I think we're finally out of lockdown,
Time to let the world know who I am.
