Finding Faith in Change: Alexander Joseph’s Heading Home

by Jack Rush

Alexander Joseph isn’t your typical singer-songwriter. When he’s not coaching athletes on the British wheelchair tennis team, he’s crafting heartfelt folk-rock anthems steeped in faith, nature, and the human journey. His new single, “Heading Home,” is a moving reflection on life’s turning points — a song about leaping into the unknown and trusting the unseen hands that help guide us along the way.

Originally written in 2013, “Heading Home” emerged during a pivotal moment in Joseph’s life. After leaving his full-time career in sport to pursue music more seriously, he and his wife relocated from Bath to the Cotswolds to start a family. Though the change was filled with excitement, it also came with self-doubt. The song captures that mixture of fear and faith, tracing the doors that opened and the quiet reassurances that arrived when he needed them most.

Faith and nature are ever-present in Joseph’s songwriting, and this track is no exception. Much like his earlier release “St. David,” inspired by a pilgrimage to the Welsh coast, “Heading Home” channels the peace he finds in spiritual contemplation and the landscapes that surround him. Now based in the heart of the National Forest, Joseph continues to draw on those environments for inspiration, weaving them into the fabric of his folk-rock sound.

Across more than a decade of music, Joseph has built a catalogue that balances personal storytelling with wider reflections on resilience and community. His 2023 EP Stop and Breathe supported reforestation work through One Tree Planted, while songs like “Singing in Rio” immortalized moments from the Paralympic Games he experienced firsthand as a coach. BBC Introducing have championed his work, spotlighting tracks such as “Not Defeated,” “Break Free,” and “Now or Never.”

With “Heading Home,” Alexander Joseph distils years of life experience into a warm, resonant song that feels both deeply personal and universally relatable. It’s a reminder of how faith, courage, and small gestures of kindness can keep us on course — especially when the road ahead feels uncertain.

The song is about navigating the ups and downs of life and those helping hands we receive, in whatever form, that keep us on course along the way.” – Alexander Joseph
