Blonde Otter Does It Again
Blonde Otter Find Their Way Forward on ‘Blonde Otter 2’
by Jack Rush
Blonde Otter has developed a talent for making uncomfortable subjects sound like a good time. The New York quintet pairs their sharp-edged songwriting with earworm melodies to explore the frustrations of life in an increasingly strange world. On their second full-length album, Blonde Otter 2, the band addresses the weirdness of today with the unifying energy of rock and roll.
The album captures a group working through the contradictions of contemporary life. Bright melodies and tightly wound guitar arrangements provide the backdrop for songs about digital disconnection, economic anxiety, and the strange theater of twenty-first century politics.
The record's creation wasn't a given. Rob Falcone, the band's bassist and principal songwriter, says the group developed much of the material while wrestling with whether Blonde Otter had a future at all.
“It's a bit of a purge of emotion, but hopefully in a positive cathartic way,” Falcone says of the album's approach.
That release of tension is central to the record's appeal. Blonde Otter doesn't abandon its playful instincts in favor of unrelenting gloom. Instead, the band uses its knack for memorable hooks, interlocking guitars, and propulsive rhythms to make heavier subjects feel immediate without sacrificing the fun of the music itself.
After a half-decade away from the album format, Blonde Otter has emerged with a record that turns an uncertain chapter into a reason to keep moving.
