Carlos Ucedda: Open Poison
Carlos Ucedda Explores Dark Elegance in “Open Poison” with Lyrical Depth and Gothic Flair
by Jack Rush
Carlos Ucedda continues his personal and artistic evolution with Open Poison, a single that fuses his classical vocal background with gothic, operatic, and electronic textures. “As always, I lean into creating and exploring new versatility in my music and projects,” Ucedda shares. True to his ethos, the track reflects his quest for what he describes as “light in the sound of notes.”
A classically trained vocalist with roots in Baroque and sacred music, Carlos studied from 1994 to 2004, taking private lessons before joining Juventudes Musicales and later SCAEM, where he performed as part of the chamber choir. His musical foundation was further enriched by masterclasses at the XXIX Manuel de Falla Courses in Granada under Helena Lazarska and a merit-certified exam from The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in 1999. Prestigious performances at venues like the Manuel de Falla Auditorium and Teatro Isabel La Católica marked the height of his early career before he took a long hiatus from music.
Reemerging in 2021, Ucedda began reshaping his sound. “The professionals in the studio and I coordinated each part and each piece of this PROYECTO_OPEN POISON_,” he notes. Drawing inspiration from Neue Deutsche Härte, gothic rock, and the operatic crossover of artists like Unheilig and Sarah Brightman, Carlos injects the single with his own essence—rooted in lyrical intensity and a dark, theatrical edge.
Thematically, Open Poison delves into the psychology of toxic friendships, using vampire mythology as a metaphor for betrayal and inner conflict. “It’s about someone who must fight between good and evil when faced with false and self-serving friendships,” Ucedda explains. “They don’t want to confront it, but ultimately must face the truth.”
One standout element of this release is the lyrical construction and vocal performance—intentionally unsettling, rich in symbolism, and committed to conveying emotional struggle. “The interpretation is central,” he says, “as is the theme of manipulation and the loss of identity through apathy and cowardice.”
Recorded in studio settings that were chosen for their ability to echo the message of the music, Ucedda brought a cinematic approach to the production. Each recording location was selected to help project the emotional and narrative vision behind the track.
Looking ahead, Carlos is preparing a new project blending opera, pop, and electronic music, and is currently writing lyrics for it. He also teased an exciting upcoming collaboration with a DJ, which he says he's “very happy” about.
A memorable comment from a listener perhaps sums it up best: “Enhorabuena!!! Por este trabajo, como siempre nos sorprendes por tu originalidad” (Congratulations! As always, you surprise us with your originality).
Carlos Ucedda’s Open Poison isn’t just a return—it’s a reinvention. Deeply personal, artistically bold, and unapologetically theatrical, it’s a compelling addition to the modern dark-operatic crossover landscape.
We've added this standout release to our Rattler Choons playlist and eagerly anticipate the next chapter from Ucedda’s ever-evolving world.
