Downtown Mystic: Maybe Love's A Crime
DownTown Mystic Brings Classic Rock ’n’ Roll Swagger to “Maybe Love’s A Crime”
by Jack Rush
US roots rocker DownTown Mystic returns with “Maybe Love’s A Crime,” a new single that taps into the timeless appeal of rock ’n’ roll, blending a classic shuffle groove with seasoned musicianship and an infectious roots-rock spirit. Released through Sha-La Music on October 9, with worldwide distribution via The Orchard/Sony Music, the single delivers a sound that feels both familiar and refreshingly alive.
At the heart of the track is an impressive lineup of veteran players. Keyboardist Jeff Levine, known for his work with Joe Cocker and Hall & Oates, adds a standout piano performance that brings a touch of vintage rock ’n’ roll magic to the arrangement. Meanwhile, drummer Steve Holley, whose credits include Paul McCartney and Elton John, joins bassist Paul Page, who has worked with Ian Hunter and Dion, to lay down a tight, swinging rhythm section recorded in a single take.
The song’s distinctive groove came together after Page suggested a shuffle-inspired rhythm to writer and producer Robert Allen, who had been weighing different musical directions for the track. The mention of Dion immediately resonated with Allen, a longtime fan of the rock ’n’ roll legend, and the resulting groove proved to be the perfect fit. The chemistry between the musicians gives the track an effortless momentum, rooted in the kind of feel and interplay that have long defined great rock ’n’ roll.
The two-track single also includes a TV Mix, offering another take on the song, while the release heads to US college radio on October 13, with promotion handled by Brandon Day of Tinderbox Music.
“Maybe Love’s A Crime” follows a productive year for DownTown Mystic, whose two acclaimed 2026 EPs, Mystic Highway Road Trip and On E Street Remix, have further strengthened the project’s reputation as a compelling presence in contemporary roots rock. The latter release features E Street Band legends Max Weinberg and Garry Tallent, adding another heavyweight connection to the project’s rock ’n’ roll credentials.
With On E Street Remix – The Album scheduled for a Black Friday release on November 27, featuring six new tracks, DownTown Mystic shows no signs of slowing down. “Maybe Love’s A Crime” is another reminder that classic rock ’n’ roll remains a living tradition when it is powered by strong songwriting, musicianship and an unmistakable sense of groove.
