Dubh Lee: Sun Down Sad Clown
Dubh Lee Releases New Single “Sun Down Sad Clown”
by Jack Rush
Dubh Lee just dropped her brand new single “Sun Down Sad Clown,” the final release from her EP FUFO. The song follows the success of the title track “FUFO,” which was picked as Track of the Week by RTÉ 2FM earlier this year.
The new song starts off acoustic-leaning, with Dubh Lee’s honest vocals telling the story of a messy and emotional relationship. About two minutes in, the song turns up to 11 and hits the listener with heavy guitars and a big rock energy for about a minute before settling back down to where things started. The switch in sonic presentation matches the emotions in the lyrics and gives the song a power that seemed almost unexpected.
In her words, the track is “a journey through song about a really intense, loving but dark relationship,” adding that the changing moods in the music reflect what she was going through at the time.
The song also includes a short audio clip from the classic 1966 film Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and features production from John Leader, who added piano, bass and drums. Trombone player Oran O’Neill also appears on the track.
Originally from Tullamore, Dubh Lee has been making a name for herself in Ireland with her honest songwriting and explosive live shows. Her music mixes folk, indie rock and pop, often moving between soft acoustic moments and loud guitar-driven sections. “Sun Down Sad Clown” is another strong example of that style and closes out the FUFO EP on an emotional note.
