Eels! Eels! Eels! Find Psychedelic Escape in the Wild Fenlands on “Nothing to Care”
by Jack Rush
East Anglian psych-rock trio Eels! Eels! Eels! turn the wild landscapes of the Fenlands into a hazy, hypnotic escape route in “Nothing to Care,” the latest video from their debut EP, Eel Land.
Driven by psychedelic textures and an evocative sense of place, “Nothing to Care” explores the restorative power of nature, suggesting that the wilderness can offer refuge from the wounds and anxieties of everyday life. Inspired by the words of the New Romantic poets, the track contrasts the freedom of the open landscape with the pressures of modern existence, allowing the vast, mysterious Fenlands to become both a physical setting and a state of mind. The accompanying video, recorded by Oana Catalina Necsulescu and Charlotte Render, brings that vision to life, capturing the strange beauty of a landscape that feels worlds away from the noise of contemporary society.
The track is part of Eel Land, a four-track debut that establishes Eels! Eels! Eels! as a band with a distinctive identity rooted in local folklore, rural landscapes and contemporary unease. Recorded at Grange Studios with producer Isi Clarke, the EP blends fuzzy garage rock, grunge, punk, blues and psychedelic rock into a sound that feels earthy, unruly and unmistakably their own.
Lead track “Owls” sets the tone with fuzz-drenched guitars and sharp indie vocal hooks, channelling the isolation of empty country roads into a stubborn, forward-moving rock anthem. Elsewhere, “Separated by the Cut” dives into local legend, telling the bizarre tale of Berney Bosgrove outsmarting the devil, while “Warrior” connects modern climate anxiety with the historical draining of the Fenlands under King Charles I in 1630. Together, the songs create a wonderfully offbeat portrait of a place where ancient myths, environmental concerns and modern alienation collide.
What makes Eel Land compelling is the way the trio transform their regional roots into something far more expansive than straightforward countryside rock. Their Fenland setting becomes a source of mythology, atmosphere and social commentary, giving the music a strong sense of identity without sacrificing its raw, psychedelic energy. “Nothing to Care” captures that balance particularly well, offering a sun-dazed, dreamlike retreat while hinting at the darker realities lurking beneath the surface.
With Eel Land, Eels! Eels! Eels! deliver a promising debut that is as strange and atmospheric as the landscape that inspired it. “Nothing to Care” is another invitation to get lost in their world — and perhaps discover that getting away from it all is sometimes the only way to see things clearly.
