MUTE TV – ‘Broken Drum’: Where Post-Punk Tension Meets the Beautiful Chaos of Relationships

by Jack Rush

There’s an undeniable chemistry at work on ‘Broken Drum’, the latest single from South West UK trio MUTE TV. Recorded live at The Heavy’s studio inside Peter Gabriel’s renowned Real World Studios, the track captures three musicians feeding off each other's energy, delivering a raw, instinctive performance that thrives on tension, noise and melody.

Released via Medical Grade Music, ‘Broken Drum’ wastes little time establishing its brooding atmosphere. A restless, stuttering rhythm gives way to a driving post-punk bassline and pounding percussion, while jagged, chilly guitar textures gradually build the tension. There's a wonderfully unpredictable quality to the arrangement, shifting between moody restraint and explosive bursts of punk-infused energy.

Vocally, the song carries an equally compelling sense of urgency, with lines such as “I spoke to the old man, he says stop your crying” setting the tone for a narrative that feels both personal and confrontational. As the guitars become increasingly fervent, the rhythm section maintains its relentless momentum, pushing the track towards an infectious refrain that demands attention.

One of the song's most effective moments arrives around the halfway mark, as the guitars settle into a more measured, almost hypnotic twang while the bass continues to rumble underneath. The vocal delivery then rises into the emotionally charged refrain, “Your everything was my everything”, punctuated by the cutting response, “what a shame”. It's a beautifully bitter moment that captures the emotional fallout of relationships, where something once considered indispensable can suddenly become a source of disappointment.

Thematically, ‘Broken Drum’ reflects on the complicated web of relationships we navigate throughout our lives. As the band explain, some connections naturally carry more weight than others, but none are necessarily straightforward. Rather than attempting to offer easy answers, MUTE TV embrace the contradictions, frustrations and emotional turbulence that come with human connection.

The decision to record the track live was clearly the right one. Engineered by Chris Ellul of The Heavy, mixed by Joe Mountain and mastered by Jon Walker, the production retains the immediacy and spontaneity of the trio playing together in a room. There's a rough-edged authenticity here that gives the song its character, allowing the individual performances to collide without losing their sense of direction.

Formed in 2025, MUTE TV bring together Tim James (vocals, bass), Joe Mountain (guitar, vocals) and Ade Poole (drums, vocals), combining post-punk, noise pop, shoegaze and alternative rock into a sound they describe as noisy love songs about joy, despair and desperation. ‘Broken Drum’ is a convincing demonstration of that approach, balancing abrasive guitar work and muscular rhythms with a surprisingly melodic and emotionally accessible core.

A lingering, feedback-soaked guitar outro brings the track to a satisfying conclusion, leaving behind just the right amount of unresolved tension. MUTE TV may be a relatively new name, but ‘Broken Drum’ suggests a band already comfortable with its identity, unafraid to embrace the messiness of human relationships while turning it into something genuinely compelling.

Raw, restless and irresistibly infectious, this is post-punk with both teeth and heart.
