Robert Kramer: Beyond The Great Divide
Robert Kramer – “Letting It Go”: A Powerful Journey from Darkness to Enlightenment
by Jack Rush
There is something undeniably compelling about a song that dares to take its time, allowing its story to unfold with the weight and emotional depth it deserves. “Letting It Go,” the expansive opening track from Robert Kramer’s newly released album Beyond The Great Divide, is precisely that kind of musical experience: an eight-minute-and-twenty-eight-second journey through personal struggle, surrender, and ultimately, spiritual rebirth.
Built around the metaphor of a medieval kingdom, Kramer constructs a deeply introspective narrative about the destructive nature of ego, the illusion of material success, and the search for something more meaningful. He begins as a king trapped inside his own castle, surrounded by the possessions he once believed defined his success. But beneath the apparent grandeur lies isolation, and the question that eventually emerges — “What have I done?” — signals the beginning of a profound personal reckoning.
The chorus, with its powerful declaration “Hold on, I'm Letting It Go,” becomes the emotional turning point. The king finally lowers the drawbridge, abandons his earthly kingdom, and begins a journey into the unknown. What follows is a striking transformation from material attachment to spiritual freedom. By the closing movement, Kramer has become a humble wanderer, walking a dirt road with “only just my soul for food.” In a beautiful final twist, the golden crown he discovers is no longer a symbol of wealth or power, but the warmth of the sun itself.
Musically, the arrangement mirrors this remarkable transformation. The addition of Northumbrian bagpipes lends the composition an ancient, almost melancholic character, reinforcing its medieval imagery. Beginning with a dark, keyboard-and-synth-driven atmosphere that captures the loneliness of the king's existence, the song gradually expands into a soaring crescendo of guitars and pipes. The nearly nine-minute running time is put to excellent use, allowing the arrangement to breathe and evolve alongside the narrative rather than rushing towards an easy resolution.
“Letting It Go” is an ambitious and emotionally rewarding opening statement for Beyond The Great Divide. It explores the difficult process of letting go of the things we mistakenly believe make us whole, suggesting that genuine freedom may begin only when we surrender the very things we have spent our lives accumulating. A thoughtful, atmospheric and ultimately uplifting piece, it sets the stage for an album rooted in personal transformation and the search for a deeper sense of purpose.
