Zoesthesia Examines the Fragility of Identity Through New Single “Coloured Clouds”

by Jack Rush

Singapore-born, Japan-based musician Zoesthesia presents an unusually introspective examination of emotional disconnection with “Coloured Clouds,” her second solo single. Working within an electro-indie-pop framework, the artist draws upon her experience with synaesthesia to investigate the relationship between perception, psychological distress, and self-understanding.

For Zoesthesia, colour is more than an aesthetic consideration. Living with 14 forms of synaesthesia, she experiences sensory associations that inform her interpretation of music, emotions, and interpersonal relationships. Following traumatic experiences during the pandemic, however, she temporarily lost access to the colours that had long served as an essential means of understanding herself.

“Coloured Clouds” emerges from that disorienting period, assigning dark blue to guilt and purple to relief. Its emotional narrative examines what happens when familiar methods of processing experience become inaccessible, and the gradual, often uncomfortable process of recovering them.

The composition's electronic-pop foundations provide a contemporary setting for a subject rarely explored in popular songwriting. Rather than treating synaesthesia as a novelty, Zoesthesia establishes it as an integral component of the work's emotional architecture.

An accompanying animated music video extends this concept, translating the artist's sensory perceptions into a visual interpretation of the composition.

Beyond her musical practice, Zoesthesia advocates for greater public understanding of synaesthesia through educational content, speaking engagements, and her podcast, Let's Talk Synaesthesia.

Ultimately, “Coloured Clouds” offers a considered reflection on identity and recovery, demonstrating how deeply individual experiences can illuminate broader questions about emotional resilience.
