Brian Howell Turns the Complications of Love Into New EP ‘Fix Me’

by Jack Rush

Falling in love is one thing. Figuring out how to not lose yourself while doing it is another. On his newly released four-song EP Fix Me, California-born, Madrid-based singer-songwriter Brian Howell explores that uneasy balance through his unique intimate storytelling and indie-pop melodies.

The project’s title track began with an unlikely songwriting prompt. After Howell asked his Instagram followers for inspiration, one response stood out: the first cup of coffee in the morning. A self-described coffee fanatic, Howell took the idea and wrote the entire song during his bus ride to work.

Meanwhile, he was beginning a relationship with his now-boyfriend, giving the track a deeper emotional foundation. Watching Madrid’s gay dating scene, Howell noticed a familiar contradiction: people wanted meaningful connections but often feared the compromises that came with them.

“Everyone wants to find their person, but nobody wants to lose themselves. Everyone wants to fall in love, but very few want to stay.”

That push and pull drives “Fix Me,” a song about the vulnerability of letting someone in without abandoning your independence.

Recorded in Catalunya’s Pyrenees mountains with producer Brad Mair, the track builds toward an instrumental outro that quickly became one of Howell’s favorite moments.

“The instrumental at the end was Brad's genius. I fell in love with it the first time I heard it.”

The new EP follows Howell’s 2021 debut album, Somewhere in the Middle, continuing his focus on love, identity, and the spaces between. Across four songs, Fix Me finds Howell turning the uncertainties of modern romance into something personal and relatable.
