Alex Boyer: SPACE

The human experience observed by Indie Folk Artist on the rise: Alex Boyer turns quiet moments into charmful melodies in EP, ‘Space’

by Jack Rush

Artist Alex Boyer gifts us with a confessional EP ‘Space’. Written over the course of a year compiling lived experience and perspective people-watching, sixteen-year-old singer-songwriter from Cumming Georgia, creates diary-like entries grounded in thoughtful lyricism with latest release. Influences of traditional Folk Americana and heavily rhythmic acoustic layering are admired, defining the project’s sound from start to finish. From cruising around guitar stores to performing at local venues, Boyer is building the foundations of authentic personal expression. This EP acts as a sonic departure from his earlier works, using accented inflections coated in sorrow throughout, epitomizing his growth and maturity as a young instrumentalist.

We are introduced to the sensitive turmoil felt in ‘Bloodshed and Rust’. Alex articulates the modern realisation of the weight of the world and how after everything is said and done, there is still a wound that ceases to heal. Rhythmic pluck-ative guitars are heard whilst a heavier message surfaces. With a clean cut production, the emotively raw vocals sitting low in the mix shoot to the ear of the listener offering advice on how we should actively share empathy. Following this, the atmosphere of an acoustic unplugged performance in ‘Til There Ain’t Nothin’ There’ pulls us in with an unforgettable guitar riff and spoken countdown introduction. Continuing the theme surrounding Alex’s deeply timbre vocals, he writes ‘so what is man supposed to do?’, questioning society’s expectations. Brutally honest, we find ourselves relating to the human experience.

Rooted in sentimentality, Boyer writes a melodic poetic goodbye to someone dear in ‘Jean’. His brilliance as a songwriter truly shines here. A peaceful conversation is had between himself and the memory of a loved one with the arrangement placing you on a front porch, quietly reflecting on a life once lived and appreciating the tiniest of pleasures: ‘well I know you’re in a better place, one with a good book to read.’

A welcome transition: ‘Running From the Night,’ a vibrant, uptempo shift takes hold. Grounded in solid country instrumentation and packed with catchy hooks, Alex Boyer delivers an uplifting message encouraging you to trust your instincts. Driven by crisp acoustic rhythms and an irresistible melodic pull, the track brings an energetic momentum to the EP while staying true to his authentic storytelling. It stands out as a memorable highlight, showcasing Boyer’s knack for crafting engaging, radio-ready songwriting.

The EP culminates in the closing piece ‘One Way Track’, serving as a definitive anchor that beautifully cements the narrative and overall sound of the project. Blending delicate acoustic warmth with reflective storytelling, the final track brings every thematic thread together into a cohesive, memorable resolution, leaving a lasting impression of Boyer’s artistic vision. ‘Space’ from start to finish is a hopeful collection of polished indie folk songs, anchored by an injured soul that is audibly healing. At such a young age Alex Boyer has found his flavour in production, storytelling and performance. For this new era Boyer is bravely crafting true bluegrass music with his signature songwriting style.
