Falling in love is usually portrayed as an act of discovery. On “Stranger In My Mind,” Swiss-based recording artist Jack Rush takes a more intriguing route, exploring what happens when discovering someone else begins to change the person you thought you were.
Released September 3 via Rattler Records, the dreamy, mid-tempo indie-rock single captures the strange psychological territory that exists somewhere between infatuation and transformation. Rush isn't particularly interested in the clichés of romance. Instead, he focuses on that unsettling moment when another person becomes important enough to alter the way you think, react, and see yourself.
Produced by Neihardt (Davide Joerg), the track wraps that introspection in a relaxed, inviting sound. Jangly guitars, warm analog textures, and an understated groove give the song a laid-back character reminiscent of Mac DeMarco, while leaving plenty of room for Rush's lyrics to carry the emotional weight.
At the heart of the song is its memorable refrain: “I'm a stranger in my mind, ever since you came into my life.” It's a deceptively simple line that captures the song's central tension. Falling in love hasn't merely made the narrator happier—it has made him unfamiliar to himself.
There is a subtle sense of disorientation running throughout the track. The certainties that once defined the narrator begin to loosen, replaced by a version of himself he didn't necessarily expect to meet. With his sophomore album, Chic Apocalypse, scheduled for release in November, “Stranger In My Mind” provides another glimpse of an artist who knows how to turn inward-looking songwriting into accessible, melodic music. Rather than presenting love as a fairy tale, Jack Rush presents it as something considerably more interesting: a force capable of quietly changing who we are.
