The Ancient Unknow: Separated
The Ancient Unknown Channel Rage and Humanity on “Separated”
by Jack Rush
The Ancient Unknown return with Separated, a track that feels both incendiary and deeply human. Rooted in fusion rock but unbound by its limits, the song channels the band’s adventurous musical identity while confronting a painfully real social issue. It’s a striking reminder that behind political systems and bureaucratic decisions lie fragile lives, families, and emotions that can be shattered in an instant.
From its opening moments, Separated pulses with urgency. Driving rhythms, textured guitars, and atmospheric layers build a cinematic soundscape that feels constantly in motion. The band’s genre-blending instincts shine here—pulling threads from classic and modern rock into something that feels both familiar and unpredictable. There are clear echoes of Soundgarden, Muse, and Led Zeppelin, yet the result is far from derivative. Instead, it plays like a rebellious collision of eras and influences.
What elevates Separated beyond its sonic power is the emotional force behind it. Inspired by a real-life story of a family torn apart by Home Office bureaucracy, the track carries a palpable sense of frustration and injustice. Rather than slipping into heavy-handed commentary, The Ancient Unknown transform that anger into something expansive and resonant—an anthemic statement fueled by empathy and defiance. The refrain, sparked by the inverted idea that “love isn’t all we need,” cuts through with both irony and heartbreak.
There’s also a theatrical dimension to the band’s presentation. Their inter-dimensional mythology—positioning themselves as cosmic wanderers currently residing in London, Earth—adds a larger-than-life flair without overshadowing the sincerity at the core of the music. Members like Spin (vox/guitar), Jordan Divers (guitar), Antz (keys), Dan G (bass), and Dob (drums) contribute to a collective identity that feels as imaginative as their sound.
Recorded at Steel City Studios under the guidance of Cal Benson (known for work with Bring Me The Horizon and Death Havana), Separated follows the band’s earlier single Animals, which earned international airplay and critical praise for its sheer sonic force. This latest release continues that momentum, already picking up spins on outlets like Radio X Aus, Total Rock, and Kerrang!.
Having performed across notable UK venues including O2 Islington Academy, The Black Heart, and The Record Factory, The Ancient Unknown are steadily carving out a reputation for both their musical intensity and their wild stage presence.
With Separated, The Ancient Unknown prove that rock music can still be bold, imaginative, and socially conscious. It’s a stirring, electrifying release—one that refuses to stay silent in the face of injustice while delivering a powerful and immersive listening experience.
